・There are few cases of heart transplant less than 40 a year in Japan.
・If he waits for the donation of heart in Japan, it takes about 5 years until he can have heart transplant.
・Because of the characteristic of ”Constrictive Cardiomyopathy”, it is impossible to prolong his life with a heart assist device.
・If he cannot have heart transplant, probability of survival for one year is very low.
Because of the reasons mentioned above, he decided to go to US to have operation. If his condition gets worse, the way carrying him to US becomes more difficult and the risk of surgery gets higher. So, it is hoped to go to US in order to have heart transplant at this timing.

About Constrictive Cardiomyopathy
Atsushi Miyagi was born in Atsugi City in Kanagawa Prefecture, December 31, 1974. When he had physical checkup in kindergarten, abnormality was found in electrocardiography, and he was diagnosed as cardiomyopathy in the precise examination. Though he couldn’t have vigorous exercise from his childhood, he had been managing his condition comparatively well every day. He moved to Fujisawa City in his elementary school days, graduated university in 1997 and got employment. But next year he came down at home and couldn’t help giving up all activities including his job which might be a burden to his heart according to his doctor’s advice.
The pumping or systolic function of the ventricle may be normal, but the wall of ventricles are abnormally rigid and lack the flexibility to expand. It is very rare disease and the cause is often unknown. When it progresses, it may cause heart failure, irregular pulse, or embolism of heart, and if it advances in severity, it may cause jaundice, abdominal dropsy, or pleural effusion.
There is no alternative treatment but heart transplant in most cases.
About the Organization
At the end of 2003 he transferred to a university hospital in Tokyo and received a definitive diagnosis of Constrictive Cardiomyopathy, since then he managed to spend every day life so far. However, his disease got worse suddenly late last year, and he was diagnosed that he couldn’t survive without heart transplant. He has been spending his life fighting against this illness for 41 years, understands his condition growing worse and worse, and eventually has decided to have heart transplant getting support from the people around him.
He is in serious condition at present, so there’s no time to wait for the donation of heart in this country.
Fortunately, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California USA approved to accept him. But heart transplant costs a lot of money for the transplant operation, treatment after surgery, and travel and stay, which is far too much for him and his family. So, his friends got together and established “Organization of Charity for Atsushi Miyagi”, and started fund-raising activities setting up the goal to cover all the costs to save his life. In order to present an ordinary life to Atsushi who has been fighting against this disease for a long time, we would like to ask your understanding and cooperation from the bottom of our heart.
